I just wanted your opinions on the Z3. I'm a Land Rover driver and am looking for someting on the opposite of the spectrum ;) I'd like to stay in the price range of no more than around $18k. Just had a few questions..

What's a good year.... (and price for that year)

How's the reliability on the engine with higher miles...

Electrical issues?

Things to look for when i'm out looking....

etc...

any other ideas or helpful advice

thanks!!!

:)

Ok so I've done a little searching and I see there is an issue with subframe cracks in the 6 cylinders (I'm leaning towards a 6 over a 4) - where would I see this crack?

I have owned a 97 2.8 and now have a 98 3.2 M roadster. I have driven both hard at times and both had been tracked while attending/instructing at the local BMW CCA Chapter High Speed Driving Schools, although this was not done to excess. I have never experienced the subframe cracking problems that others have mentioned. Have the car inspected before buying.

I am not sure if your looking for an M or non-M however both are relaiable. The 2.8 liter is a great motor and if well taken care of will last in excess of 200,000 miles, as is with most BMW motors. The 2.8 liter also has the same wider rear track as the M versions. The 3.2 liter motor is also a great motor.

No electrical issues that I am aware of, the convertible tops rear wiindows fog badly if not taken care of and the seams around the rear window come loose.

Best of luck, hope this helps...And welcome to the board!

thanks Big D! Those were the years I'm lookng at 97/98 I'd love to find an M! I'll have to keep an eye out.

I'm pretty handy with a wrench (even have the scars to prove it ;) ) But I will be bringing a mechanic friend on me for the last look before I buy. If there was a crack - where would it be?

thanks!
